The Story Behind the Name

Deane Brown Bishop Elementary School honors a lifelong Dublin resident whose story reflects both the history and heart of the community. Born in 1919, just as the original Dublin High School building opened, Deane Brown Bishop grew up on a family farm where Bridge Park now stands. Her life spanned a century of dramatic change in Dublin, and she embraced it all with resilience, adaptability, and a deep sense of service.

Bishop’s roots in Dublin run deep. Her ancestor, Basil Brown, arrived in the area in 1826. Her father was part of Dublin’s class of 1899. She graduated from Dublin High School in 1937, and later spent nearly three decades as a beloved bus driver for Dublin City Schools—literally driving generations of students toward their futures.

A true pioneer, Bishop began driving at age six and even took the wheel of the fire truck when needed. She was also one of the first people trusted to enter the home of the famously private Ethel Artz, a beloved local character. Though Dublin was still a small village during Bishop’s youth, her impact stretched far beyond its borders.

The Bishop family's contributions to the district extend well beyond Deane’s service. Her sister, Mary Emma Bailey, was a teacher and namesake of Bailey Elementary. Her daughter, Suzie Feasel, worked in the district for nearly four decades, and her son-in-law, Ralph Feasel, served in various roles for over 50 years, including 10 years as principal of Dublin High School. Today, Ralph’s son Wade teaches at Dublin Jerome High School, which sits on land once owned by the Bishop family.

In a new twist on tradition, the name of Elementary 15 was recommended not by a committee, but by eighth graders at Grizzell Middle School who researched and presented a slate of meaningful names. The Board of Education’s final selection was Deane Brown Bishop.

As the community looks ahead to the opening of its 25th school, it does so with a name rooted in strength, family, and a century of commitment to Dublin.
